![]() Choice is good, and VirtualDJ 2020 offers a huge amount without over-facing. You can of course still use last week’s default in “old” mode, or load in whatever unpleasant retina scorching skin you have used for the last decade. And because there’s just so much, there’s a search box to help you find things that it may be able to do.įor me and painting a broad stroke, it feels better and definitely more elegant and professional. Under “options and tweaks” you get a ridiculous amount of control over what VirtualDJ does. One unrelated thing to point out - the preferences are insane. But you can change colour scheme (shades of grey and even a daylight mode), waveform appearance, jogwheel display etc etc - it’s all there. Well… once you’re out out of starter mode that is. VirtualDJ 2020 offers full control over just about anything you could hope for. Inside each level there’s also an abundance of options within these new default skins too. It’s generally more subdued, and reminiscent what might happen if you put Algoriddim djay and Traktor Pro in an interface blender. The red/blue deck 1 and 2 metaphor is more subtle too. VirtualDJ 2020 is a natural progression from the last default interface - it’s flatter for a start, with the skeuomorphic shaded buttons finally being ditched. But needless to say that it has changed considerably over the years. I’m not about to trawl through old screenshots to show every iteration of the evolution of the default VirtualDJ interface. This is obviously new territory for VirtualDJ 2020, and I’m sure these small issues will be ironed out soon enough. ![]() ![]() And vertical waveforms only appear in performance mode, but stay when you switch to pro mode. But there’s no four deck view in performance mode unless you select in pro mode first. You have to go to the Pro skin, and from the options dropdown select 4 decks. For example, there’s no real 4 deck view by default. Given that this is a beta, there are a few wrinkles to iron out though. I like this as it’s almost a training wheels approach, where you can progress through the VirtualDJ experience without the fully daunting bells and whistles approach. PERFORMANCE: This pulls back the plethora of available features in the decks a tad, and gives more of the screen over to the library. PRO: The new flatter VirtualDJ 2020 becomes apparent, with more advanced control (including custom buttons) over effects and what you see in the players. This layout delivers the main features you’ll find on controllers. STARTER: Stripped back with an instant gratification vibe.ĮSSENTIALS: You’ve got the basic down - now it’s time to step up. But I suspect that most people draw their conclusions from the first impressions of opening VirtualDJ for the first time.įirstly, there’s a new approach to the DJ community, with default skins being tailored to where you see yourself and skill level as a DJ. This means that you can tweak the interface into anything from a minimalist barren landscape, right up to a truly headache inducing graphical nightmare. VirtualDJ is unusual in the pack of major players in that it has a skinning engine. ![]() They also talk of not holding back big features for landmark releases too. So It’s not a rebuild or some form of reimagining - it’s still the VirtualDJ that oh so many have come to know and love, but with perhaps a different approach to the DJ community. For them, 2020 is a fresh way of thinking about VirtualDJ and where it sits in the somewhat volatile DJ software landscape. I don’t know if this will change in the final release, but it does reflect the vibe I got from Atomix regarding this release. But the application is still called VirtualDJ 8, and the preferences show that this is v8.4 b5308. To be clear - I’m running the beta version of the VirtualDJ 2020 download. I’m sure I could write reams of words dissecting the reasons for this, but it’s a thing and is something that Atomix is addressing directly in the release of VirtualDJ 2020. And the user base is massive, if you give the numbers pushed out by owners Atomix as being a real representation of the true number of active users that is.īut despite all of this, the VirtualDJ brand is perceived poorly in comparison to the pro trinity of Traktor Pro, Serato DJ Pro, and rekordbox. It really does - you should look at the feature list and dig around inside the preferences to see the power. It’s been around since the dawn of digital DJing, and has all the features and then some needed by more or less every style of DJ. VirtualDJ is quite the conundrum in the DJ software world. ![]() We got the thing down to a floor size of one 4x8 ft sheet of plywood! First off, I’m not a big ‘document my life with pictures’ kind of guy my apologies for not having a lot of pictures from the early stages of construction. An hour later, I had a basic redesign, reducing the overall footprint of the structure from 80 sq.ft. Argh! We chatted a bit more about what she wanted and I got started on the redesign with a pencil and ruler. Shortly after arrival, I learned the plans I had created would be completely scrapped – the design was vastly larger than what they had envisioned. I printed up the plans and headed to Susie’s house (about an hour away) to show the plans and get started. I'm saving downgrading the 2014 Mac Mini or using the older one with an audio injector as my last options. I'm at the point I'm seriously thinking I should just downgrade my MacMini to Mojave. I thought VMWare would "just work," like it has with my other VMs in the past. (Not shoot-'em-ups, but games more like the newer redone Myst games.) I've tried a number of different things (like VirtualBox, as I mentioned, and UTM). The goal is to get a working Mojave system I can play some games in. It seems to me that #1 is my best choice if I can get by the infinite loop, but I'm open to other ideas. What do I lose by doing it? Are there issues with, say, file formatting and storage that would make that slower than a VM created directly in VMWare? While this might be doable, there are reasons I'd rather not do this, since I'd rather use a good source for the Mojave install file. But I have to get past that infinite loop it hits on restarting.Ģ) Is there a good source for a Mojave install file? Or some way to use the upgrade file?ģ) What about converting the VB VM to VMWare? I'm considering several possibilities, but need help for each one:ġ) If I can create a VM based on the restore partition of my current Mac Mini, then I can downgrade it from Big Sur to Mojave. (This is why I pointed out that VirtualBox could use that same media to create a VB VM - VB doesn't have an issue with the data on that ISO.) ![]() It takes a long time (I think over an hour) to prepare the install media, but it reports it as bad media. I found I had to mount the ISO as a drive, then drag the Mojave file and drop it on the window for creating a VM. I didn't expect more, since it's just an upgrade file.ģ) I used the Mojave install ISO I downloaded. I think the EFI messages are about booting from a disk, then from the network, but it's hard to tell.Ģ) I tried using my Mojave upgrade DMG from the App Store, but I can't get past the Restore utility. Then it goes back to the smaller black window and continually repeats. I get the Apple logo and progress bar and when it tries to reboot, I get a smaller black window that resizes to a larger black window, and then I get EFI info that flashes by too fast to read. The Mojave install ISO file worked in VirtualBox, but the VM is absurdly slow. One had directions to create one in VirtualBox, so I followed that and tried making a VM from the Mojave install image I got from there. (That's my guess.) Then I looked online and found a few articles about creating VMs in different software. I used the App store to get the Mojave upgrade DMG file and tried to create a new VM from that, but since it's only an upgrade file, it doesn't work. If you have a way to do that, a sure-fire way, feel free to bypass everything I've tried and tell me how to do it! Star Wars: X-wing Rogue Leader, a 2005 prequel to the 1995 comic book Aviation. That’s when I asked myself: “How hard would it be to convert one of the classic games into VR?” And here we are. As a space flight simulator game, X-Wing puts the player at the controls of various starfighters in space combat against enemy spacecraft. None of that worked very well (it was just varying degrees of flatness). The actual single-player mode puts players in the cockpits of dueling Rebel and Imperial squadrons, swapping back and forth between the two viewpoints surrounding the construction of the Starhawk. So then I searched the web for any X-Wing VR games and found tools that automatically converted old games into VR, like VorpX, Trinus, TriDef and even some nVidia VR drivers. It looks every inch like the first-person, in-cockpit space combat game that fans have been waiting for since the original Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: TIE Fighter classics. The dearth of X-Wing VR experiences is actually what set Prof Butts on this modding journey in the first place. You generally have to create compensating events to “undo” something. Nor would that actually even make much sense. With Event Sourcing, since the events are in an immutable log (event stream), you can’t just “update” an existing event. While I don’t think the concept of Event Sourcing is difficult, how you deal with an immutable log (event store) is very different than just recording the current state.Īn example of this is when using a relational database if you needed to “fix” data, you’d simply go and write an UPDATE statement to update records in your database. The biggest pitfall is how different the concept can be to developers who have only ever done CRUD and only ever recorded the current state. Best Practices and Pitfalls when Event Sourcing? What you can do in this situation is make sure any old event can be upconverted at runtime to the new event. The difference is that you cannot backfill and update old events in an existing stream. If it’s not null and has a default value the situation is still the same as a relational database. You’d need to deal with the value being null. With event sourcing, making a new property on an existing event nullable is exactly the same. If you were adding a new column to a table, you would either need to make the column nullable or give it a default value and then possibly backfill existing data. I often like to compare this to a relational database. The definitive answer to versioning is Greg Young’s Versioning in an Event Sourced System eBook. No Software Architecture Q&A on this Blog/YouTube could happen without a few questions about Event Sourcing. How to handle versioning when Event Sourcing? If you’re using CQRS, you’d have events such as CustomerAdresssChanged and CustomerDiscountRateIncreased. If you wanted to publish an event based on CRUD, you would have very generic events such as CustomerUpdated. Because commands are explicit, you can then infer various events to be published from those commands. You’re not “updating a customer” but rather you’re using explicit commands such as ChangeCustomerAddress or IncreaseDiscountRate. With CQRS, all your commands are making those state changes explicit. For example, if you’re performing an Update to a customer why is that happening? Did their address change? Did their discount rate change? With CRUD based approach, you don’t know exactly, you’d have to imply it based on the change being made. With CRUD, when you’re making state changes via Create, Update, Delete, you aren’t capturing explicitly why it’s occurring. When should I choose CQRS over CRUD based “RESTful” endpoints?Ĭhoose CQRS over CRUD when you want to be explicit. Event Choreography is having all services consume and produce events that ultimately fulfill the long-running business process.Ĭheck out my post on Event Choregrophay and Orchestration for more. And when I say long-running business process, that could mean milliseconds to weeks.Īn alternative to a Saga is using Event Choreography, which removes the centralized logic of orchestration. The saga is a centralized place to handle the workflow of a long-running business process. Since there can be failures, the saga is responsible for handling failures by sending compensating actions to the appropriate services. It’s responsible for coordinating a long-running business process between multiple services where there are no distributed transactions. Is the saga an anti-pattern since you have a transaction spanning multiple bounded contexts? So my answer to this question is nothing is different between the two. And because they are independent communication is done in a loosely coupled fashion via an Event or Message Driven Architecture. You aren’t sharing behaviors or data between services. Services should own a set of business capabilities and the data behind those capabilities. Bounded Contexts are about defining boundaries. The Bounded Context portion of the definition is from Domain Driven Design. In my mind, SOA was always about being loosely coupled, however that may not have been how the general developer community understood it at the time. Loosely coupled implying Event Driven Architecture. If I dissect that definition, Service Oriented Architecture that’s loosely coupled.
